The Limitrophe: Poetics of Counter-Cartographies

*no meeting on 8/18

Working against the erasures of the officially sanctioned document, we will seek to counteract the  boundaries and representations set by traditional organizations of space by imagining a deterritorialization of official cartographic records and searching for counter-cartographic possibilities of tracing and marking the wayward, the off-path, the clandestine, and the limitrophes of marginalized lives. We will conceive and build personal maps that link ancestry with the present needs of our daily lives and we will form these out of a multiplicity of investigations—memories (individual and communal), summonings, DIY survival tactics, techno-botanical rituals, and oral mapmaking. Texts and sources include but not limited to: Heriberto Yépez, Asiya Wadud, Byung-Chul Han, Angel Dominguez, Park McArthur & Constantina Zavitsanos, Natasha Ginwala, Homi K. Bhabha, Craig Santos Perez, Audra Simpson, Kamau Brathwaite, Jennifer Tamayo, Brandon Shimoda, Raven Chacon, and Nisha Ramayya. This workshop is offered as an online real-time gathering as well as asynchronous-solo format. Write to me at valerie.kw.hsiung@gmail.com with your questions.
